PYMATUNING TOWNSHIP

Collision kills 1-year-old boy

A 1-year-old boy died after the car in which he was riding was hit in the rear at 4:15 p.m. Saturday on North Hermitage and Colt roads in Pymatuning Township.

The Allegheny County Coroner’s Office pronounced Jacob Rigby, 301 Malleable St., Sharon, dead in Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh at 4:20 a.m. Sunday. The infant was flown by helicopter to the Pittsburgh hospital after being admitted first to UPMC Horizon, Greenville.

Jacob was in a car seat in the back seat of a 1995 Ford Escort station wagon, driven by Cynthia Spiker, 23, of 170 Delaware Road, Delaware Township, police said.

The station wagon was stopped in the southbound lane of North Hermitage Road -- state Route 18 -- at a red light, police said. A car, driven by Floyd J. Haddenhan, 71, of 16977 Berkshire Road, Meadville, hit the rear of the Spiker car, police said.

Witnesses told police Haddenhan appeared to be trying to switch to the passing lane, but pulled back when he saw the passing lane was occupied, police said.

Another back seat passenger in the Spiker car, 2-year-old Sabrina McMurdy, also of 301 Malleable St., was treated at UPMC Horizon, Greenville.
