Hull Street man says chimney is hazard

A Sharon resident is asking council to help with what he called a safety hazard in his neighborhood.

Owen Magargee of 416 Hull St. told council Wednesday that the property next door at 424 Hull is dangerous.

Magargee said the chimney is leaning so far it is just a few feet from his house.

Months ago, he said, the owners re-sided the house and left construction debris and garbage all over the yard, which is blowing onto his property and that of his neighbors.

Magargee gave no indication of how the problem is dangerous except for the leaning chimney that he said could fall over.

He said he’s been asking City Code Officer Frank Smeraglia and council for months to have something done.

Smeraglia said he has been having a hard time finding the property owner because the house keeps changing hands. He said the house is being sold again and he has notified both the buyer and the seller of the problems.

Magargee complained to council members Wednesday after they approved an amendment to the 1997, 1999 and 2000 Community Development Block Grant budgets, reallocating $34,300 in unused funds to clear and demolish dilapidated and unsafe houses.

"I’ll pay the bill to bring it (the house at 424 Hull) down," Magargee told council.

Joseph Caminiti, community development director, said 20 properties are on the demolition list. Caminiti did not have the list to say whether 424 Hull is on the list.

The state and the county historical society must clear the houses for demolition before work can begin, he said.
