SHARPSVILLE

Borough won’t try to collect wage taxes from SQP workers

Sharpsville council announced Wednesday it will not take any action to collect wage tax money owed to municipalities by Sharpsville Quality Products, which filed for bankruptcy in July.

Borough Manager Michael Wilson said council wants to advise SQP employees that council will not take any action against them and wants to make the employees aware their respective municipalities may try to claim the wage-tax money from them. He said council also wanted to advise the workers that they have the ability to take action on their own.

Wilson said SQP made wage-tax payments to the borough in the first and second quarters of 2000 but not in the third and fourth quarters. He said about 75 people were working at SQP at the time; eight of them lived in Sharpsville.

Sharpsville’s wage tax is 1 percent of an employee’s annual salary. Wilson said the borough collected about $11,000 from SQP in the first and second quarters of 2000.
