GREENVILLE

Borough candidates to rally Saturday

A bipartisan coalition of Greenville borough candidates is rallying from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday in Riverside Park, said Lorrie Smith, a Democratic council candidate who helped to organize the event.

Democratic mayoral candidate Carmen A. Surano plans to attend. Council candidates planning to attend include Democrats Pamela S. Auchter, Deborah A. Brocklehurst, Pete Longiotti and Ms. Smith, and Republicans David P. Henderson and James E. Stegkamper, according to Ms. Smith.

Surano and the Democratic council candidates -- four seeking four-year seats, two seeking two-year seats -- are unopposed in Tuesday’s primary election.

Incumbent council candidates Earl A. Butterfield, Richard S. Houpt, Brian D. Langietti and David J. Welton -- all Republicans -- were not invited, Ms. Smith said. Democrat Ronald A. Mead is also running for council.

Six Republican candidates, including four incumbents, are seeking their party’s four nominations for four-year council seats. Two Republican candidates for two-year council seats, incumbent Mayor Clifford H. Harriger and incumbent tax collector Linda A. Crisman are unopposed.

Candidates attending the rally will be introduced but won’t make any long-winded campaign speeches, Ms. Smith said. She said the rally will be informal. "Dress comfortably, bring the kids and relax," Mrs. Smith said. The rally will be held in a pavilion near the basketball court, Ms. Smith said.
