Man gets 5-10 years for rape of girl, 11

A 19-year-old Farrell man will spend at least 5 years in state prison for the rape of an 11-year-old girl.

John Herbert Gregory, also known as John Herbert Martin Gregory, 1216 Negley St., was sentenced Tuesday to 5 to 10 years after pleading guilty April 12 to a charge of raping someone younger than age 13. He was credited with 182 days already served in Mercer County Jail.

Sharon police said Gregory raped the girl July 27 in a Sterling Avenue apartment.

Gregory also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in connection with the Dec. 24 stabbing of a man in an Orchard Street residence in Sharon. Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas R. Dobson sentenced Gregory to 1 to 2 years in prison on that charge. That sentence will run concurrently with the rape sentence.

Gregory apologized to the girl and her family.
