City wants to spread its 'secret'

Even though Farrell Councilman Louis Falconi expressed concern that Farrell's Centennial Celebration could be the city's "best kept secret," there's no doubt it will go off.

Falconi said Monday he's still finding people who don't know it's coming up.

And it's getting close. The celebration opens July 10 for a five-day run.

"I think it's pretty set," Mayor William Morocco said of plans for the celebration, which will be held primarily on the grounds of Farrell Area School District.

The major tasks left to do before B&J Amusements Inc. moves in with the rides is lay out the booth locations for churches, school organizations and service clubs, and finish security preparations, Morocco said.

The celebration opens with the annual Farrell Boosters fund-raising picnic at the Lions Den. The festivities will move across Sharon-New Castle Road to Paulekas Stadium for the 7 p.m. invocation and Torrance Baker performing "What Is America To Me."

Singer Jerry Chiodo and comedian Lou Rosati perform at 8 p.m.

Athletes from the school's state and league championship teams will be honored at 9 p.m., giving the first day its name, "Steelers' Night."

The schedule for the rest of the celebration:

July 11

  • "Community Singspiration" with Gospel Change, Real, Evangelist Deborah Lewis-Sanders, Letitia Banks and a youth mime and dance group at 7 p.m. Lawrence Thomas will sing at 8 p.m.

    July 12

  • "An Evening of Classic Rock" with Blacklisted going on at 6 p.m., followed by the River Saints and Grant St. Exit.

    July 13

  • "Reunion Night" with disc jockeys Tony Costanza and Jim Bickel spinning oldies and big band favorites at 6:30 p.m., and Carl Severino and the Party Machine playing live at 8 p.m.

    July 14

  • "Farrell Day" starts at 11 a.m. with the dedication of a statue at the city building, a parade at 12:30 p.m. and presentation of honorees at 2 p.m. Blue Max Schang plays blues and rock at 4 p.m., Frankie and the Sensations play oldies at 6 p.m. and the Carl Marks Orchestra performs at 8 p.m., topped by Pyrotechnico fireworks at 9:10 p.m. The celebration closes with a benediction at 9:30 p.m.

Stey-Nevant Public Library will hold activities for younger celebrants. Kevin Delagrange, known as "the juggling guy," will offer a show and juggling workshop at 6:30 p.m. July 9.

    A book fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 10-13.

Qualifiers from the Summer Reading Program will take part in the parade.

The rides, midway games and food booths will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. nightly. July 14, they also will be open from noon to 4 p.m.
