SHARON

Vocal Hall honoring barbershop singing with second building

The Barbershop Hall of Fame will open to the public Aug. 18 in downtown Sharon.

The building is the first of several planned genre-derived offshoots of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum, and is across East State Street from the main building. It is the former Whitmer-Smith clothing store at State and Vine Avenue. The main building once was the Willson's furniture store.

The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America and Sweet Adelines International participated in the planning of the Barbershop Hall and will be represented at the opening.

Quartets will sing on street corners throughout the city and other strolling entertainment is planned.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with formal activities from noon to 3 p.m.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 17.

Regular hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Admission fee will be $5 for adults and $4 for seniors, or tour both buildings for $12 for adults and $9 for seniors.

Any barbershop or Sweet Adelines groups interested in participating in the activities may call (724) 983-2025.
