Ladder maker to furlough production workers Monday
So far this year, workers furloughed from Werner Co. have been from management.
On Monday, the layoffs will touch production workers.
The aluminum extrusions and ladder maker in Sugar Grove Township will lay off a yet undetermined number of production workers due to a soft economy, John Guyton, human resources director, said this morning.
"We don't know (how many) until Monday. We're still working through the numbers," Guyton said.
The workers are members of United Steelworkers Local 373-01, which signed a five-year contract with the company on Nov. 1, 2000, Guyton said.
He said the layoffs are temporary. Employees' recall "will depend on the economy and the demand for our product," he said.
"This is not totally unusual. We go through our ups and downs," he said.
In early May and in late June, the company laid off about 40 salaried employees. The same "soft economy" reason was given for those management layoffs.
Werner Co. employs about 1,100. InvestCorp., a Middle Eastern investment group with offices in New York City, owns the majority of the company.
