UPMC Horizon touts center's certification

The Regional Diabetes Center at UPMC Horizon has received the American Diabetes Association Education Certificate for quality diabetes self-management education.

This recognition certifies that the center meets the national standards for diabetes self-management education developed and tested by the National Diabetes Advisory Board.

"Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. With this recognition, the ADA assures our patients that they are receiving high-quality care in the management of their diabetes," says Karen Kosnac, RN, manager of the center. "We are thrilled to receive this honor during National Diabetes Awareness Month."

ADA recognition is granted only after a rigorous review process by experts in the field of diabetes who evaluate programs on their ability to provide each patient with a complete, individualized diabetes education. Regional Diabetes Center educators are knowledgeable health professionals who provide patients with comprehensive information about diabetes management.

All ADA-approved educational programs cover a number of specific topics including stress and psychological adjustment, family involvement and social support, nutrition, exercise, medications, goal setting, and blood glucose levels.

As part of the UPMC Health System, the Regional Diabetes Center is associated with the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute. Founded in 1999, the institute integrates diabetes caregivers, educators, and clinical and research experts; measures diabetes outcomes; and targets disease management strategies and resources.
