Tax hike going toward fire truck
South Pymatuning Township supervisors unanimously passed a 2002 general fund budget of $765,561 on Dec. 17.
The budget is supported by 5.075 mills under the new tax assessment ratio, equivalent to about 15 mills under the old assessment ratio.
The assessment ratio changed for this year from a third to 100 percent of a property's 1970 market value.
Of the 5.075 mills, 0.525 mill will go toward the fire department and 4.55 mills to general spending, said Supervisor Chairman Mike Nashtock.
Taxes went up about 5 percent from last year. Municipalities were allowed to raise taxes up to 5 percent to compensate for the change.
Last year's $793,241 budget was supported by 14.5 mills. Under the old assessment ratio, 13 mills went to general spending, and 1.5 mills for fire protection.
In November, supervisors discussed raising taxes half a mill to cover the cost of a new $200,000 fire truck. The truck is expected to arrive in April.
Nashtock said the 5 percent tax increase will help offset the cost of the new fire truck.
A mill is $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value. At 5.075 mills, a property owner with a home assessed at $30,000 would owe $152.25 in taxes, about $7 more than last year.
A mill previously brought in about $8,000 for the township; now it will bring in about $24,000.
