FARRELL

Woman admits theft of benefits

A Farrell woman pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to one count of converting Social Security benefits to her own use.

Cynthia Smith, 43, of 113 Hamilton Ave., made the plea before United States District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose, according to a news release from the United States Attorney's office. Her sentencing is scheduled for April 5.

Ms. Smith, who was released on a recognizance bond, could face up to 5 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both, the release said.

Ms. Smith was the representative payee for Frank Smith permitting her to receive and handle his Social Security benefits. After his death in 1991, Ms. Smith continued to cash 97 of those checks in the total amount of $69,789.

The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General.
