GREENVILLE

Fire at former Wolford works is suspicious

Greenville firefighters said the cause of a garage fire at the former Wolford Sheet Metal Works, 36 Achre Way, is suspicious.

The garage, owned by Lillian and Fred Rutter, caught fire at 10:19 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters said they spent about three hours at the scene.

Because no utilities ran into the building, firefighters are calling the blaze suspicious. A state police fire marshal was scheduled to investigate this morning.

Rutter used the garage to store car parts. The building was insured. A damage estimate was unavailable, firefighters said.

Two adjacent buildings -- America First Mortgage at 28 Shenango St. and Greenville Ice Company at 40 Achre Way -- were exposed to the fire but not damaged, firefighters said.

Greenville-West Salem Township police and Hempfield and West Salem Township firefighters responded. No one was injured.
