No charges to be filed in Bloomfield incident

No charges will be filed against a Sharon man in connection with inappropriate material in a computer at Bloomfield High School Jan. 25, the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department said.

Chris Higgins, 49, of 630 Shady Ave., was the school's athletic director, technology coordinator, golf coach and computer teacher before turning in his resignation Tuesday.

Superintendent Ken A. Halbert Jr. claimed via a press release that an employee made a "misjudgment" resulting in students viewing "highly inappropriate material" on a school computer.

The incident involved a Real Player program that enabled six female sophomores and juniors to view a video on the Internet of an "offensive sexual nature" on a computer in a computer lab at the school, said Trumbull County Chief Deputy Ernie Cook. The video belonged to Higgins, he added.

"No charges will be filed at this time because we don't anticipate any charges from our department with the information we have," Cook said.

"The students that did see got in of their own accord," he said, adding that all of their testimony was consistent.

One student summed it up by saying none of them was forced to watch it, Cook said, adding that it would be difficult to prove there was a crime, since Higgins was not with the students when they watched the program and so lacked intent to commit a crime.

Messages left by The Herald for Higgins and Halbert were not returned.
