FARRELL, SHARON

Police recover stolen SUV but driver runs

Southwest Mercer County Regional police said they spotted a sport-utility vehicle Tuesday that had been reported carjacked Friday in Sharon, but the driver ran and police were unable to catch him.

Police spotted the SUV at 9:48 p.m. and got the driver to stop in the 1000 block alley between Wallis and Fruit avenues, Farrell, police said.

The driver, who was the lone occupant, was ordered out of the car, but ran away, police said.

Police said they were unable to catch the driver or track his prints in the snow.

The driver was a black teen-aged boy, 5-feet, 6-inches tall, wearing a black hooded coat, police said.

A 43-year-old Sharon woman told Sharon police she was carjacked at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of Cedar Avenue. The woman picked a man up at a store near George Street after he asked her for a ride, police said. While she was driving, the man suddenly reached over, put the SUV in park and demanded money, police said.

The woman told the man she didn't have any money and he grabbed her coat, police said. The woman told police she was able to get out of the car, and the man jumped in the driver's seat and drove away.

The woman described the carjacker as a 17- to 20-year-old black man who is about 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs about 180 pounds, police said. She told police the man was wearing a hat with a chin strap.
