HERMITAGE

Family escapes fire but trailer home destroyed

A Hermitage family escaped a burning trailer home on Dutch Lane Wednesday, but the home was destroyed in the blaze.

Hermitage firefighters were called to Lot 16 of Dutch Lane Mobile Home Estates at 11:47 a.m., according to Mercer County 911. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze quickly and keep it from spreading to neighboring trailers, which are between 10 and 15 yards apart.

John Vilegi of neighboring Lot 14 said he woke shortly before the fire started in the neighboring trailer.

"I heard a scream, looked out my window and saw the fire. The place went up (in flames) quick," said Vilegi, whose home suffered minor damage.

Several of his windows were broken as firefighters sprayed his home to keep the fire from spreading, he said.

Vilegi said his neighbors scrambled safely out of their home, holding a baby. Another neighbor said she rushed to the neighbors' aid with clothes for the baby.

As of 10 a.m. today, no one was available at Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department to provide a fire report.
