Viaduct project still up in air

There is still no completion in sight for the Oakland Avenue Viaduct which spans Connelly Boulevard in Sharon.

Mark Miller of the Mercer County Bridge Department said Wednesday work has stopped on the viaduct because of winter weather but the county still has not received word on whether the bridge is structurally sound.

Officials learned in November that the steel beams are out of alignment by as much as three inches in some parts, causing the beams to bow.

Contractor Carmen Paliotta Construction, of South Park, Pa., is responsible for hiring an engineer to determine if the misalignment will compromise the integrity of the structure or its longevity, Miller said.

The $3.6 million project was originally supposed to be completed Nov. 30. Federal money will pay for 80 percent of the project and the state will pay the rest.
