An elderly Shenango Township driver accidentally created his own drive-through window at the McDonald's restaurant in Hermitage 1 p.m. Friday, when he stepped on both the accelerator and the brake in his car and broke a window on the south side of the building, police said.

"He was three feet from me," said McDonald's maintenance employee William "Ken" Hopkins, 54, of Sharon, who was washing the window when he heard a car engine.

"I heard something revved up, like an engine. Then I heard squealing," Hopkins said. "I turned around and he was not very far from me, almost to the bushes. I just jumped."

Hopkins wasn't hit but the car crushed his wash bucket.

Mike Onyszczak, 77, of Bedford Road, and a passenger were unhurt, police said.

The store district supervisor, Lynnette Bonanni of Mercer said that she thought a chandelier inside the store had broken when the driver hit the building. She said no one inside was injured.

Damage to the window and frame is about $200, according to a window technician at the scene. Bushes and a spigot were also damaged.

Police do not plan to charge Onyszczak, but did add that the driver said, "That's it. I'm done driving."
