HADLEY, GREENVILLE

Jury convicts man of mail fraud, lying

PITTSBURGH -- John L. McDonald, 60, of Hadley, was found guilty Friday in U.S. District Court of 18 counts of making false statements to obtain worker's compensation and four counts of mail fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh.

McDonald faces a maximum of 110 years in prison and $5.5 million in fines for making false statements to the Department of Labor in an effort to obtain $17,778 in worker's compensation, the office said.

McDonald, a mail carrier, claimed he was too injured to work after a car hit him on his route. In the application for compensation, McDonald said he was not working outside his federal job as a mail carrier, the office said.

McDonald, it turned out, was selling antiques on the Internet and working a booth at the Valley View Antique Mall in Brookfield at the time, the office said.

McDonald is to be sentenced on May 22.
