HERMITAGE

Ex-Sharon man publishes book

Former Sharon resident and firefighter Michael G. Burns has published a book about his maternal great-grandfather's Civil War experiences.

James Herald -- the subject of "From Rochester to Winchester" -- enlisted at age 18 and served from 1864 to 1865 after signing on in Rochester, N.Y.

The book is a historical roster of the men who served in the 22nd New York Cavalry and a short description of Herald, who lived in Riga, N.Y. He was captured at Stoney Creek, Va., and sent to Andersonville (Ga.) Prison.

After the war, Herald was discharged in Winchester, Va., and briefly returned to New York. He then moved to Hubbardston, Mich., with his brother and family.

Herald was twice married to Irish women and had 16 children. His grave is in Hubbardston.

Burns is the son of Helen Herald Burns and the late Fred J. Burns, who formerly was a Sharon police detective. The author's parents moved 20 years ago to Hermitage from Sharon.

Michael Burns graduated from Ohio State University in Columbus with a turf grass management degree. He is general manager of Valleaire Golf Club in Hinckley, Ohio, and is married to Cindy Snyder Burns. They live in Medina, Ohio.

Burns has been a Civil War buff since childhood and has been interested for years in genealogy.

Sharing his love for genealogy, his wife discovered the connection between James Herald and the Civil War. The association piqued the couple's interest and led to three years of research.

The Burnses followed the trail from archives in Washington, D.C., and to several historical societies.

The book is available from Willow Bend Books, 65 E. Main St., Westminster, Md. 21157-5026; phone (800) 876-6103; Internet, www.willowbend books.com.
