SHARON

Strike is settled at Medal Industries

A strike has been settled between Medal Industries in Sharon and members of Teamsters Local 261.

Eight Teamsters members ratified wage terms on a labor contract on Sunday after company and union representatives reached a tentative agreement on Friday. No vote or terms of the contract were available.

Union workers, which represent shippers and receivers at the 330 Vine Ave. company, struck last Monday after saying they were unable to reach wage terms on an existing contract.

Workers said they were in the second year of a three-year contract which allows for wages to be renegotiated every September. Last September the union sought a wage increase but at the time company officials said they couldn't afford higher pay so the union agreed to a six-month extension, workers said.

In contract negotiations earlier this month the company rejected two offers whereby union members would have received a $1-an-hour raise and made no counter offers, workers said.

Doug Robbins, president of Local 261, would only acknowledge this morning he was pleased with the agreement and that workers returned to work this morning. A spokesman for Medal Industries did not return a phone call this morning.

Medal Industries distributes plumbing, electrical and hardware supplies.
