FARRELL

AG hosts workshop for VFD relief organizations

The state Auditor General's Office will hold a workshop for voluntary emergency service personnel who run Volunteer Firefighters Relief Associations at 7 p.m. April 3 at the Farrell Fire Station, 500 Roemer Blvd.

The workshop will offer instruction on the state department's updated management guidelines booklet, which includes information on safeguarding association assets, the payment of training expenses and buying new equipment.

The workshop also will cover state funding for relief associations, general administrative requirements and other topics.

"The Department of the Auditor General is committed to providing assistance to our volunteer emergency services to help them better serve the families of our Commonwealth," said Auditor General Robert P. Casey Jr. "We also provide guidelines to the VFRA officers so they can meet record-keeping requirements established by our department and comply with state law."

Associations receive state funds generated from a 2-percent tax on fire insurance purchased by residents from companies not incorporated in Pennsylvania. The money is mostly used to buy equipment.

In 2001, more then $45 million was given to nearly 2000 relief associations. Mercer County associations received more than $390,000.

People planning to attend can register by calling (717) 787-1381, or (717) 787-1308. Walk-ins also will be allowed to attend.
