MERCER

Skateboards, scooters banned on some streets

Mercer council Tuesday adopted a temporary ordinance banning skateboards, in-line skates, roller skates and scooters in high-traffic areas.

Council implemented the temporary law, which bans skateboarding in two commercial districts, one residential district and on all state highways in order to have time to thoroughly examine the situation before enacting a permanent law.

Among the streets where the law prohibits skateboarding and related activities are U.S. Routes 62 and 19, state Routes 58 and 158 and the area around the courthouse.

For specific streets in the borough where such activities are prohibited -- zones R-3, C-1 and C-2 -- residents may pick up a colored zoning map at the borough office.

Skateboards, scooters or skates ridden in prohibited areas may be impounded by police for no more than 30 days, and the violator may be fined up to $100, according to the ordinance.

Police plan to enforce the law as residents complain.

Besides publishing the ordinance in local newspapers, and offering the maps, council plans to notify the schools to make students aware.
