Trial date set for Settlemire in fatal traffic case

The trial of a Hermitage woman charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter in the January death of another Hermitage woman is set to begin Aug. 5 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Catherine Settlemire, 41, of 630 Chesapeake Court, was charged Jan. 28 by the Ohio Highway Patrol after a Jan. 26 crash on Standard Avenue in Masury.

Police said the car Ms. Settlemire was driving crossed the center line and hit a car driven by Margaret "Peg" Snyder, 72, of Stevenson Road, Masury. A passenger in the Snyder car, Yvonne Edwards, 71, of 5070 Cassidy Road in Hermitage, died Jan. 27 of accident-related injuries, police said.

Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Ken Bailey said Ms. Settlemire waived her right to a speedy trial during Monday's pretrial hearing and a second pretrial was set for May 28.

Bailey's request that Settlemire not be allowed to drive until trial was denied by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Andrew Logan, who will hear the case.

Also denied was a defense request to drop a bond stipulation that requires Ms. Settlemire to check in weekly with a probation officer while she is in pretrial release, Bailey said. Her bond of $5,000 remained unchanged, he said.

Ms. Settlemire was originally charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault but a Trumbull County grand jury on Feb. 1 reduced the charges to misdemeanors after results of a Breathalyzer and field sobriety tests were thrown out due to technicalities.
