NEW CASTLE

Rig accident knocks out cable service

About 20,000 Adelphia cable-television subscribers in the Shenango Valley area lost service Tuesday after a traffic accident in New Castle knocked out 500 feet of fiber-optic cable.

The accident happened at 11 a.m. at Croton and East Washington streets, said Lou Abraham, general manager of Adelphia in New Castle.

A tractor-trailer driven by Clair Robinson, 72, of New Castle was traveling northwest on East Washington Street and turned left into an alley, pulling an Adelphia fiber optic cable. The cable stretched taut and pulled against a traffic light at the intersection, causing the traffic light to break, New Castle police said.

The cable eventually broke between two telephone poles, police said. The rig suffered minor damage, police said.

Robinson was cited, police said.

At noon Tuesday, Abraham said, restoration crews were fixing the lines and the cable was expected to be in service by the end of the day.

All broadcast channels were back on the air between 4 and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Abraham said.
