HERMITAGE
Ed Caldwell wins Pa. award
Ed Caldwell, who has worked 18 years for Hermitage-based Arc of Mercer County, has received the 2002 Nettie Mann Award from Pennsylvania Institute for the Blind and Handicapped.
The accolade recognizes a disabled person who has exhibited outstanding achievement and exceptional character in living and coping with their disability, particularly in the workplace.
Caldwell, 55, has severe hearing loss and wears hearing aids in both ears. Essentially nonverbal, he communicates primarily through hand gestures and some sign language. Caldwell also has cerebral palsy, which limits the use of his right hand.
Arc of Mercer County acquired the PIBH contract for the Pennsylvania Museum and Historical Commission in 1996 to repair, refurbish and repaint the blue and gold historical markers seen across the state. Arc staff members bring the markers to Hermitage.
Caldwell does the detail work on the markers by hand painting the yellow letters after blue paint has been applied.
He also refinishes furniture. In this process, Caldwell applies stain to furniture after it has been stripped and sanded.
He will be honored in June at a PIBH dinner and will receive a $500 cash prize.
