SHARON

Man charged after spitting on police

A Sharon policeman was hurt during a fight with a Masury man Sunday afternoon, police said.

Police were called at 3:46 p.m. to the 400 block of Meek Street for a domestic dispute between Michael A. Redmond, 30, of 1030 N. Stateline Road, and a woman, police said.

When police tried to arrest Redmond, he fought them, police said. Police said they had to use pepper spray to put Redmond in handcuffs.

On the way to the Shenango Valley Regional Lockup in Farrell, Redmond got out of his handcuffs although his hands were cuffed behind his back, police said. At the lockup, Redmond continued to fight police, swung the handcuffs at them and spit on them, police said.

During the scuffle, patrolman Steven Rossi suffered minor injuries and was treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, police said.

Once inside a jail cell, Redmond broke a light, banged his head on the bars and tried to hang himself with his shirt, police said.

Redmond was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated harassment by a prisoner, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and on a warrant from District Justice James E. McMahon's Sharon office for $2,100 in unpaid fines, police said.

The charge of aggravated harassment by a prisoner is a new one which makes it a felony for anyone in police custody to intentionally expose police to bodily fluids, police said.

Redmond was arraigned before District Justice William L. Fagley, Greenville, and was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $20,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. June 4 before McMahon.
