Ex-officer Baker pleads no contest

A former Brookfield police officer could face up to six months in jail after pleading no contest to breaking down the door of a one-time girlfriend's mobile home.

James Baker -- a lieutenant with the Brookfield Township Police for almost ten years until he resigned last Friday -- pled no contest Thursday in Trumbull County Eastern District Court to charges related to an April 23 break-in of a trailer at Wyngate Manor Mobile Home Park.

However, when asked how he wanted to plead by Judge Ronald J. Rice, Baker said "guilty" several times.

Baker, 33, of Warren-Sharon Road, Brookfield, was charged Monday with menacing by stalking, a first-degree misdemeanor, and criminal trespass, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, after he broke into a trailer owned by Jennifer Lingo, 225 Joshua Drive on April 23, according to Trumbull County assistant prosecutor Sean O'Brien.

Baker allegedly broke down the door of the trailer, but nothing was taken, according to Brookfield police.

Baker's relationship with Ms. Lingo was described by Trumbull County assistant prosecutor Chris Becker as an "ex-girlfriend." Baker is married.

O'Brien said the menacing by stalking charge was related to numerous harassing phone calls Baker made to Ms. Lingo.

According to assistant Trumbull County prosecutor Chris Becker, Baker faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine on the stalking charge and 30 days in jail and a $250 fine on the trespass charge.

A sentencing hearing will be set after a pre-sentence investigation is complete, said Judge Ronald J. Rice.

Baker was released on his own recognizance and was ordered to stay away from the victim during this time.
