GREENVILLE

Council officially requests state money for operations

Greenville council passed a resolution Tuesday officially requesting emergency money from the state to help the borough stay afloat financially through the end of the year.

The money -- which would come in the form of a no-interest loan -- would be the first chunk dispersed to Greenville through the state Act 47 program for financially distressed communities, which the deficit-plagued borough entered last month.

Borough Manager Kenneth Weaver said he met recently with representatives of the state Governor's Center for Local Government Services, which administers Act 47 under the umbrella of the state Department of Community and Economic Development to review the borough's most-pressing fiscal needs.

The Governor's Center will craft a formal request, addressing those immediate needs, review it with borough officials and then submit it to DCED for approval.

Once the request is submitted, it could take up to two months for the borough to receive any money, Weaver said.

The amount of emergency money that the borough plans to request had not been determined as of Tuesday, Weaver said.
