All charges against a Masury man accused of fighting with and spitting on Sharon police were waived Tuesday to Mercer County Common Pleas Court.
Michael A. Redmond, 30, of 1030 N. Stateline Road, appeared before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, on charges of aggravated harassment by a prisoner, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. His charges were waived without testimony.
The charge of aggravated harassment by a prisoner is a new one, which makes it a felony for anyone in police custody to intentionally expose police to bodily fluids, police said.
Redmond also has to serve 90 days for a summary offense to which he pleaded guilty last week, McMahon said. Though there is a 30-day delay before Redmond would have to begin serving the sentence for appeals purposes, Redmond asked to begin serving his sentence right away.
Redmond asked if he could serve house arrest. McMahon said he may be able to serve house arrest if he's eligible for the program.
The latest charges stem from a May 27 incident in which police said they were called to the 400 block of Meek Street for a domestic dispute between Redmond and a woman. When police tried to arrest Redmond, he fought them and police had to use pepper spray to put him in handcuffs, police said.
On the way to the Shenango Valley Regional Lockup in Farrell, Redmond got out of his handcuffs although his hands were cuffed behind his back, police said. At the lockup, Redmond continued to fight, swinging the handcuffs at police and spitting on them, police said.
During the scuffle, patrolman Steven Rossi suffered minor injuries for which he was treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, police said.
Once inside his jail cell, Redmond broke a light, banged his head on the bars and tried to hang himself with his shirt, police said.
Redmond's bond was reduced to $5,000 on the charges from the fight.
