Out with the new, in with the old for Herald sports

Out with the new; in with the old! If that sounds odd, it's a reverse of the oft-used popular adage, "Out with the old; in with the new!" But for The Herald sports department, it's a truism.

Former long-time sports editor Lynn Saternow is back full-time with The Herald, replacing the newest member of the department, Nathan Summers, who is moving to the Phoenix, Ariz., area.

Summers, an Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate who formerly worked for Allied News, Grove City, joined The Herald staff in early 2000. He hails from Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Saternow, 54, first joined The Herald in January 1970 after graduating from Kent State University. He worked as a sports writer, assistant sports editor and general news reporter, before being named sports editor in 1981.

He retired from The Ottaway Inc.-owned Herald in July 1998. He'll return to the Community Newspapers Holding Inc.-owned Herald as associate sports editor, joining Sports Editor Jeff Greenburg and Assistant Sports Editor Ed Farrell on the three-person staff.

"Nate did an outstanding job for us," said Herald Editor James A. Raykie Jr., "but he's moving west to seek a new career.

"We look forward to Lynn's return. His experience, writing ability and ties to the community will be a great addition to our staff. This sports staff could very well be the best in the long history of the paper."
