Dog is killed by cops after attack on dog and man

Sharon police said they had to shoot a dog early this morning that was attacking another dog and its owner.

At 12:45 a.m. police said they got a call about a rottweiler running loose in the 100 block of Logan Avenue. While police were waiting for the Shenango Valley Animal Shelter to arrive, the dog ran to the home of Kevin McDowell, 378 A St., police said.

McDowell's dog was tied to the porch, and the rottweiler began to attack the dog, police said. McDowell tried to separate the dogs and the rottweiler bit his right hand, police said.

Police said they tried to stop the rottweiler by using pepper spray and hitting it with batons but neither worked so they were forced to shoot the dog.

The rottweiler died immediately and did not suffer, police said. The animal shelter took the body, police said.

The rottweiler was not wearing a collar and police said they have no idea who owns the dog.

Police said they don't know if McDowell was treated for his bite wounds. McDowell's dog was injured but not killed, police said.

The Herald was unable to contact McDowell this morning.
