Sunday concert to help theater

The Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum, Sharon, has set its first event to raise funds for renovations of the Columbia Theatre, which it recently bought from Columbia Theatre Inc.

The Lettermen will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at Packard Music Hall, Warren, Ohio.

Sharon native Tony Butala is the lone original member of the Lettermen and founded the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum with Sharon businessman James E. Winner Jr.

Butala had bought the Columbia in 1984 and donated it to the non-profit Columbia Theatre Inc. The vocal hall recently purchased the theater from the group after it announced it had no more interest in renovating the theater.

Vocal hall officials have said several groups have committed to performing benefit concerts for the vocal hall and the Columbia Theatre.

Officials added that the 1,749-seat Columbia is likely to become the site for induction ceremonies and benefit concerts.

Tickets for the concert, which range from $15 to $25, are available at the vocal hall, 98 E. State St.; Packard, 703 Mahoning Ave.; Tops Markets and Subway restaurants in Warren; on-line at www.vghf.com and www.tickets.com; and (800) 766-6048.

The vocal hall is open from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and noon to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free, but donations can be made.
