Residents to take to streets Tuesday
Residents of Sharon and Farrell are expected to take to the streets Tuesday for the 19th annual America's Night Out Against Crime, sponsored locally by ERASE Anti-Drug Coalition.
Pastors, community leaders, law enforcement officials, Weed and Seed and AmeriCorps Vista are also helping to sponsor the event, according to a news release from ERASE. Organizers say they expect more than 33 million people to participate nationally, the release said.
ERASE is inviting residents of Farrell and Sharon to participate in the event, which is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, the release said.
From 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, organizers are asking residents to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.
ERASE is asking the local clergy and their congregations, along with youth, community leaders, law enforcement and others who want to participate, to join in a march before the night out officially begins.
The march forms at 6:15 p.m. at the ERASE office, 901 Fruit Ave., Farrell, proceeds along George Street to Wallis Avenue and concludes with a tent service at about 7 p.m. at the corner of Spearman Avenue and Idaho Street by Greater Mount Zion's Church of God in Christ.
