Bones found in Crawford County may be those of American Indians

CONNEAUT LAKE (AP) -- Bones found by a resident likely are from a former American Indian burial ground, officials said.

An initial examination of the bones found July 26 indicated the remains were those of American Indians, said Crawford County coroner Patrick McHenry, who had the bones evaluated by forensic anthropologist Dennis Dirkmaat of Mercyhurst College in Erie.

A survey of the site in Sadsbury Township, Crawford County, found more bones at the remote location off a back road.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has sent an investigator and he has contacted the Seneca National Tribal Historical Preservation Museum at Salamanca, N.Y.
