HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP

VFW janitor surprises burglar inside lodge

A janitor at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374 in Hempfield Township discovered and fought with a burglar inside the lodge early Sunday morning, but the burglar made off with an undetermined amount of cash and stole a pickup from a neighboring business, Hempfield Township police said this morning.

Police said the janitor found the burglar inside the lodge at 5:20 a.m.

After a brief struggle, the man scrambled out of the building, jumped a fence and stole a white pickup from neighboring Oakes & McClelland Co., police said.

Police provided no further descriptive information about the thief.

The janitor was not hurt in the struggle, police said.

Police said the stolen pickup -- a 1990 GMC -- had the Pennsylvania plate YDV-8948 and Oakes & McClelland lettering on its side.
