A state safety inspection of the 132-year-old police headquarters in Hubbard turned up 18 hazards, including 14 considered serious.
The inspection by the Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of Labor and Workers Safety was requested by acting Chief Kenneth Oyler and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 132, representing patrolmen.
Oyler sent copies of the inspection reports to Robert Paterniti, city safety director, and Councilman Richard Keenan, chairman of the safety committee.
Inspectors who checked the building constructed in 1870 found eight types of mold, corroded electrical conduit, collapsing ceilings, ungrounded wiring and passageways with protruding nails and splinters.
If the headquarters is forced to move, Paterniti said he would recommend a tax increase referendum to raise money for a replacement.
Paterniti estimated it would cost $500,000 to refurbish the building.
