Joy Miller was appointed Monday to replace resigning Donald Achenbach on the Greenville school board, while Director Jo Ann Beh was tapped to take Achenbach's place as vice president of the board.
Ms. Miller is a former school board member. She served for four years but came up short in her bid for re-election last year.
In Ms. Miller's first stint on the board, she served on the transportation, activities and curriculum committees. She will be sworn in at the board's agenda review meeting on Oct. 16 and finish out Achenbach's term, which expires in December 2003.
Achenbach, who served on the board for nearly 11 years, announced his plans to step down last month. Board members formally approved the resignation -- which Achenbach called a "retirement" -- on Monday.
Several board members and Superintendent Dr. Patricia M. Homer lauded Achenbach for his years of service and expressed their sadness at seeing him go. They then gave him cake and commemorative gift plate.
While on the board, Achenbach co-chaired the football stadium renovation committee, helped negotiate two teachers' contracts and played a lead role in the high school renovation.
Mrs. Beh, a nine-year board member, was appointed to take over Achenbach's vice-presidential duties. She was the lone person nominated for the role.
