Police arrested a Sharon man suspected of robbing a Brookfield convenience store and his father early Tuesday after the father allegedly tried to hide his son from the law.

George Crawford Jr., 23, of 390 Quinby St., was arrested at 2:09 a.m. at home by Sharon police on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Brookfield police charged Crawford with robbery.

Sharon police said they went to Crawford's home after Brookfield police told them Crawford was a suspect in a robbery.

Brookfield police said at 12:15 a.m. Crawford went into Brookfield Dairy Mart on U.S. Route 62 and placed three 18-packs of beer on the counter. He asked the clerk to cut him some meat, then bolted out the door with the beer, police said. Police said the clerk went after Crawford and was assaulted.

When Sharon police arrived at Crawford's home, they said his father, George Crawford Sr., 57, answered the door and told police his son was not at home.

While police were still there Crawford Jr. walked out of the house carrying a bag full of beer, police said.

The younger Crawford ran from police, fought with them and threw a handful of dirt into the eyes of one of the policemen, police said.

Police said Crawford Jr. was driving a car that Greenville-West Salem Township police said he wasn't supposed to be driving. When police arrested him, Crawford Jr. also had a crack pipe and metal push rod in his pocket, police said.

The clerk from Dairy Mart identified Crawford Jr. as the robber, police said.

Crawford Sr. was charged with hindering apprehension, police said.

The Crawfords were arraigned before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon. Crawford Jr. was released on $5,000 unsecured bond, and his father was released on his own recognizance.
