Westminster announces programs

Westminster College, New Wilmington, will host several on-campus activities.

Dr. Bethany Hicok, an assistant English professor since 2001, will present the college's faculty forum at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 25 in Patterson Hall's Room 311.

Her talk, "Ordering a 'Box of Maniacs': Contexts of Desire in the Work of Sylvia Plath," focuses on connections between Sylvia Plath's development as a writer and her experiences at Smith College in the 1950s.

Dr. Scott Momaday will speak at 8 p.m. Sept. 25 in Orr Auditorium. The Native American scholar, poet and Pulitzer Prize-winning author was born a Kiowa in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl and raised on reservations in the Southwest.

He earned a Pulitzer for the novel "House Made of Dawn." Momaday is founder of "The Buffalo Trust," a non-profit foundation for the preservation and restoration of Native American culture and heritage.

This first Diversity Symposium event for Westminster's 2002-2003 academic year is part of Westminster's continuing Sesquicentennial Celebration. A reception and book signing will follow.

The 2002-2003 Celebrity Series Season opens at 8 p.m. Sept. 28 in Orr Auditorium with The Fifth Dimension.

The group has 14 gold records, headlines in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and tour throughout the world.

The college will host its Fall Family Day on Sept. 28. The Westminster tradition gathers family members to celebrate and enjoy the special activities.

The day begins at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and a meeting with President R. Thomas Williamson in Russell Dining Room.

A family barbecue is planned for 11 a.m. at Anderson Amphitheater.

Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. for the Westminster vs. Allegheny football game.
