Three Herald staff changes announced

Veteran Herald editorial page editor and managing editor Noel Carroll has retired, and general assignment reporter Tom Fontaine has resigned to accept a similar job with the Beaver County Times.

In a related move, Amanda Smith-Teutsch, a May graduate of Youngstown State University, has been hired to fill the spot vacated by Fontaine.

Carroll, who had been managing editor and editorial page editor for five years, joined The Herald staff in 1979 as a copy editor. Before that, he had served in reporting, writing and editing capacities with The Record Argus, Greenville.

He received several writing awards, including a national award for editorial writing, and was active in political campaign coverage and as a participant in political debates for many years.

He lives in Greenville.

Fontaine, who reported on county government and politics in addition to general assignments, joined The Herald in 1999. He graduated from Greenville High School and Kent (Ohio) State University, where he was a star baseball pitcher.

Before joining The Herald, he played in the minor leagues in the Baltimore Orioles farm system.

Fontaine received a couple of writing honors at the annual state Keystone Press Awards dinner in State College in 2000 and again this year.

Smith-Teutsch, a graduate of Hubbard High School, graduated from YSU with a double major in journalism and French and a minor in language studies.

She served an internship with The Vindicator, Youngstown, in a design capacity in 2001 and was a reporting intern for Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services in Washington, D.C., in June and July of 2000.

She and her husband, Eric, live in Warren, Ohio.
