Mayor:
Don't
burn
debris

Clark residents should stop burning storm debris on their properties, Mayor Douglas Bradley said at a news conference Wednesday behind the fire station.

Bradley said a burning pit is being set up near the fire station, where the borough will dispose of wood and other burnable debris. Residents should push the debris as close to the curb as they can, he said, so work crews can collect it.

Garbage and nonburnable debris should be taken to one of two large trash containers that will be set up in the cul-de-sacs on Milton and Nora streets, he said.

Freda Tarbell of the state Department of Environmental Protection said some of the material being burned could release hazardous chemicals. The DEP, she said, is part of a problem-solving team that responds to disaster sites and coordinates cleanup efforts.

Also, the American Red Cross opened a station Wednesday at Milton Street and state Route 258 to distribute minor repair supplies and to provide emotional counseling and first aid. The aid station is a supplement to the service center already open in the Clark fire station.

Hours for the bulk distribution station and service center are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Assistance to families is determined on a case-by-case basis and may include temporary emergency housing, cleaning supplies or other assistance necessary for families to remain safely in their homes. No appointment is needed; families should bring proof of residence.

A meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Clark borough social hall to help tornado victims with problems they are encountering.

Invited to the meeting are representatives of the fire and police departments, emergency management agencies, local hospitals, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Sharpsville Area School District and utility companies.

The meeting is open to all Clark residents, Bradley said, adding that he would extend an invitation to county officials and other communities that were affected by the tornado.
