Legal assistance, list of contractors available

Law enforcement agencies and local organizations say they're ready to help tornado victims find proper help or get redress.

Mercer County Bar Association is offering free legal assistance to anyone affected by Sunday's disaster. Attorneys can help people replace important documents such as wills, deeds or powers of attorney, said John C. Reed, president of the association. Homeowners can also check with the group about their rights before signing agreements with contractors.

Homeowners who believe they've been victimized by a contractor can contact the Mercer County District Attorney's Office, said District Attorney James P. Epstein.

Mercer County Builders Association has a list of all of its members who can be contacted, said Dot Hillman, the organization's executive officer.

"We demand that all of our businesses be in business for at least one year, and if they go on your property they must have liability insurance,'' Ms. Hillman said.

Contacts are:

   » Mercer County Bar Association: (724) 342-3111.

   » Mercer County District Attorney's Office: (724) 662-3800.

» Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office Bureau of Consumer Protection hotline: (800) 441-2555.
