10 schools send singers to choral fest

Ten local school districts will send their best singers to the Mercer County Junior High Choral Festival Wednesday at Farrell High School.

While the singers will start rehearsing at 8 a.m., a public concert is set for 7:30 p.m.

The choir will be made up of students in grades 7 to 9 from Commodore Perry, Farrell, Greenville, Grove City, Hermitage, Lakeview, Mercer, Sharon, Sharpsville and West Middlesex school districts.

Choir directors from the schools choose their top singers. About 12 from each school will participate, making a choir of 120.

Edgar S. Groves will be guest conductor. Groves is conductor and musical director of the Shenango Valley Chorale. The former Hickory High School choral director teaches at Grove City College and Pennsylvania State University -- Shenango Campus, Sharon.

The chorale's pianist, Cynthia Ward, will accompany the singers. The singers will perform spirituals, Christmas carols, Hebrew songs and American selections. The concert is free; donations will be accepted.
