National acts coming to club

By Larissa Theodore

Freddie "Fresh" Faraone was a mobile disc jockey for 13 years before his motivation for music stirred him to open his own business.

From that impulse was spawned Freddie Fresh's, an all-ages club in downtown Sharon. Faraone describes Freddie Fresh's as an underground music venue that attempts to help local bands break through and provides a fun environment at the same time for everyone in the community.

Though it was in April 2000 that the club opened, Faraone considers Wednesday to be a special day for the business. Freddie Fresh's will host its first "big national show" headlining the dark rock band Bile along with special guest Nocturne. The two bands are touring the country, with Sharon as one of its many stops among larger cities including Detroit, Brooklyn and Chicago.

Faraone said he books acts to play every weekend and does what he can to help them out. For a little more than $100 he said he'll rent out his 3,000-square-foot club and provide a disc jockey for one hour for up to 100 people.

Recently, Faraone hosted an annual battle of the bands night at Freddie Fresh's featuring nearly 10 acts from Pittsburgh, New Castle, Youngstown and the Shenango Valley.

While Faraone said the Bile-Nocturne show will be his first big headliner, it definitely won't be the last.

"I love music, people and entertaining," he said. "I plan to bring in many other large scale acts."

From the New York City underground, Bile has been spewing its musical fluid since 1992.

The group has been considered a forerunner in the new crop of dark industrial-metal bands while maintaining its own demonic electronic sound. Bile travels extensively, doing its over-the-top shows. Concertgoers can expect a barrage of sarcasm, blacklights and dry ice.

The group has opened for such big hardcore rock acts as Marilyn Manson, Korn, Gwar, Type O Negative and Stabbing Westward.

Touring along with Bile is Nocturne, a provocative and energetic band from Dallas.

Nocturne has won multiple best band awards and has earned spots in two independent films: "The Attic Expeditions" starring Seth Green and "Wishcraft."

Nocturne released its third album in August, "Paradise Wasted," a remastered 15-track compact disc of its previous album "Welcome To Paradise."

Freddy said eventually he hopes to expand the club and make it an exclusive hangout for teens.

"Eventually it will be a coffee house-type hangout, he said. "It's a safe environment. Nothing ever seems to go wrong."

He's already begun an after-school program called "Game Night" for school-age kids to come and play Nintendo, Play Station and other popular video games.

The Bile and Nocturne show starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $8.
