Helicopters will land Saturday near Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6166 at 5550 E. State St., Hermitage.

"Weather permitting, the helicopters will fly in at 10 a.m. and kids and parents can sit in them, walk around them and get a closer look," said VFW general manager Bob Zikmund.

Two helicopters -- a UH-1 Huey and a UH-1 Cobra -- will be on display for at least an hour. "Their engines won't be running -- they are approachable, so to speak," said Gunnery Sgt. James Dillon, a Marine Corps recruiting officer from the Butler office.

The Marines also plan to set up a chin-up bar to allow visitors to compete.

"It's open to the public. We're doing this to raise community awareness about the Marines," said Dillon, who added that the helicopters and pilots will be coming from Johnstown. "It's also an opportunity for any young men or women who are looking toward the military or the aviation field to ask some questions and get some information."

Recruiters will be there from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., but the helicopters for only about an hour.

Zikmund said the veterans at the Hickory post were pleased to host the Marines. "These veterans are very proud of this event because of what the Marines do and what we represent," he said.

"We've done a couple of functions out there with the soon-to-be Marines in the area. It's just a good area," Dillon said.
