A Brookfield man accused of trying to run over his estranged wife and her boyfriend was sentenced to community service and ordered to pay fines, according to a clerk at Eastern Trumbull County District Court in Brookfield.

Eugene K. Peters, 43, was convicted Thursday on four charges including domestic violence, aggravating menacing, criminal damaging and assault. Three charges of criminal damaging, aggravated menacing and assault were dismissed.

Police said Peters on Sept. 22 violated a restraining order to keep away from his estranged wife, Mary M. Peters, 32, of 626 N. Stateline Road.

She told police she and a male friend were leaving her home when Peters came out from the garage, hit her and started a fight with her friend. Peters also tried to run the couple down with his truck and broke windows in their vehicles with a shovel, police said.

When Peters began fighting with the friend, Peters was knocked down and hit his head on the steps, resulting in a 3-inch gash, police said. He drove away in his truck and police said they found him later when they answered an emergency call about a man needing medical attention on King Graves Road.

Judge Ronald J. Rice on Thursday ordered Peters to pay $2,750 in fines in addition to court costs; Rice suspended some of the fines, leaving Peters owing only $900.

Rice also gave Peters 570 days of jail time, but suspended all of them. Peters must instead perform 200 hours of community service and will serve 4 years of probation.

He is not to have any contact with Ms. Peters or her friend and must submit to psychological and drug and alcohol evaluation, a clerk said.
