Family
gets look
at new
home

When Barb Zook's home was destroyed in the November tornado, she, like other residents in Clark and South Pymatuning Township, saw years of memories and hard work strewn about on the ground.

Family pictures and all her possessions were scattered in the mud and muck on Milton Street in Clark.

Her friends Patty Padovich and Dave Misko, whose home up the street was untouched by the storm, opened their home and lives to Ms. Zook and her two children.

The families shared meals; their dogs, a miniature dachshund -- a storm survivor like the Zooks -- and a Labrador-shepherd mix, shared the same bowl.

"It's been great having them here," Ms. Padovich said. "I'm going to miss them when they're gone."

That may be soon. Ms. Zook's new three-bedroom modular home arrived Wednesday.

The families trudged down the street through the snow and slush to see the new home delivered to the lot where Ms. Zook's home used to stand.

"It was finished Feb. 11," Ms. Zook said. "And they've just been waiting until we had some dry weather to put it in. I can't wait."

The entire ordeal, she said, has been a learning experience.

"I learned an awful lot," she said. "Calling utilities, calling my insurance agent, ordering the house, learning what insurance companies cover and what they don't ... it's really opened my eyes."

Before her new home could be delivered, Ms. Zook said she had to decide where she wanted the bedrooms, what flooring to choose, and where the front entrance would be.

After that, she said, came the furnishings.

"I told my kids, 'You're going to help me, right? Because I'm going to need it,' '' she said.

The furniture is all ordered, and, just this week, she said, she bought all of the bedding the family will need in the new house. Ms. Zook's daughter Jesse and son Harold both live at home with her.

"It's been nice staying with (Misko and Ms. Padovich)," Ms. Zook said. "They are our best friends in the neighborhood, and attend our church. But it's hard living in someone else's house."

Ms. Zook said she doesn't know when her house will be ready to move in to. The house still has to be put together, and the basement, which was filled with snow, has to be dried, she said. When it is ready, she said, it will be worth the wait.

"It's going to be home at last," she said.
