WE rescue made pipefitter a hero

Every year, the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission releases a list of American heroes, people who selflessly put their lives in danger to save someone else. The Herald Tuesday published a list of local heroes who received the award, and, upon further research, names of additional local recipients have been found.

On July 28, 1960, pipefitter David Jardine saved LeRoy A. Marsteller from an impending fatal fall at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Marsteller, who was 36 at the time, was working from beams 40 feet above the concrete floor with his head below uninsulated wires when an electrical arc occurred. Marsteller lost consciousness and fell. With one foot wedged between a beam and a crane truck, Marsteller was left hanging upside down.

Jardine, then 58, also a pipefitter, climbed a ladder onto the beams, which were slippery in places. He walked along a beam near Marsteller and then swung himself downward onto another beam eight inches wide 35 feet above the floor.

Grasping Marsteller around the waist with both arms, Jardine raised him enough to free his foot. He held Marsteller until he could be lifted down with a crane. Marsteller sustained head injuries but recovered.
