ATV rider faces theft, drug-abuse charges

Police said they arrested a 31-year-old Brookfield man Wednesday morning after he attempted to flee from them on a stolen all-terrain vehicle.

Donald Kowalczuk, 1190 state Route 7, was spotted at 1:07 a.m. riding a three-wheeler on Warren Sharon Road, east of Warner Road, police said.

A policeman attempted to stop the ATV after noticing it had no lights, but Kowalczuk sped away, police said. The policeman chased him on foot for 59 yards before tackling Kowalczuk and pulling him off the ATV, police said.

After searching Kowalczuk, police found a flashlight, a screwdriver, a crowbar, bolt cutters, a magnetic hideaway keyholder, suspected marijuana, crack pipes and "other equipment secured to the ATV consistent with criminal tools," Police Chief Daniel Faustino said.

The ATV was reported stolen last year from Hubbard Township; it was towed from the scene, police said.

Kowalczuk was charged with receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding police, criminal trespassing and possession of criminal tools, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and drug abuse instruments, police said.
