Malleable Heights water problem to be fixed

Several apartments in Mercer County Housing Authority's Malleable Heights community in Sharon have water problems, and the authority plans to use federal funding to fix them.

The basements of 800 and 801 Ravine Place and 819, 821, 823 and 825 Spearman Ave. flood during downpours or when there is a lot of moisture in the ground, said authority Executive Director L. DeWitt Boosel.

The problem is so bad in one apartment that the authority is not renting it, he said.

Wednesday, the authority agreed to use its annual modernization grant from the federal government to pay for the work, which will be done this year.

"It's going to take us a while to come up with a plan," said Boosel, adding that he estimated a cost of $50,000 to correct the problem.

Boosel said he doesn't think the work will impact the exterior modernization of Sharpsville Gardens, which will take up the majority of the approximate $1.5 million modernization allocation.
